Fire from Heaven: Life in an English Town in the Seventeenth Century

Stirring stuffThis is a remarkably readable book which explores the lives, both religious and less pious, of Dorchester personalities in the early C17th. It is a wonderful balance between thorough and wide-ranging local history and the soap opera drama of daily life. All set in the fascinating and outlandish landscape of C16th Puritanism. Highly recommended for any reader.
Excellent! Deeply satisfying local history. This is a deeply satisfying study of Dorset, a town that contributed early settlers to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in the decades that led up to the English Civil War.

Sea of Glory: A Novel Based on the True WWII Story of the Four Chaplains and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester

The Max in Self-SacrificeI found this book made me realize just how much others have sacrificed for our freedom. The characters were real to me...much more so than going to a movie where it's like watching the news when bad things happen. We're anesthesized to the horror happening to others. I spent the day reading (such luxury!) and felt I had spent the day on the Dorchester. Knowing beforehand what the book was about initially disappointed me, yet I read on to see how the authors would handle this true story. I was glad I did. The account was very real to me. The sacrifice of the four chaplains was beyond reason...so far so that faith was in the forefront. If you are serious about history, this is a must read.
What America NeedsThe release of "Sea of Glory" could not have come at a better time in our country's history. This Novel by Ken Wales and David Poling, shows the best mankind has ever produced, both as servants of God and Country! This slightly fictionalized account, details one of Americas most heroic actions in WWII. The story of the Four Chaplains and the USAT Dorchester is an emotionally strong one by itself, but these authors were able to amplify the emotions producing a book you will never forget.
Dorchester RelativeMy uncle died on this ship. He was in the Coast Guard. I heard my mom all my life talk of the Dorchester and the Four Chaplains. Now I was finally able to read a story about it. Thank you for writing this book. I did cry at some parts for the uncle I never knew. I wish my mom was still alive to read it. I have my uncle's purple heart and I will lay this book next to it.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read some family history. This book was excellent.

Dud Noman's struggle to exist. This book is about Dud Noman. Never has there been a more appropriate name for a charachter. The book takes place in the early decades of this century and revolves around a completely pathetic soul that the reader will both relate to and sympathize with. It is the story of his struggle to survive and live and really causes the reader to reflect upon their own existence. The characters are all multi-faceted and complex, but that is one of my favorite things about Powys. Like all Powys novels this one is well worth the effort.

Originally self-published and printed on a press intended for canning lables, this Phaidon reissue and update of this classic does real justice to Richard's stunning in-your-face documentary style. In addition to including all the original photos and text, this new addition includes photos Richards made of the racial strife in nearby South Boston in the 1970s, as well as additional text, most of it reproduced in Richard's handwriting.
Gene Richards is, sadly, one of a dwindling if-not-dying breed of documentary photographer, whose lives and work are dedicated to telling the stories of the voiceless. A former Vista volunteer and Civil Rights worker, Richards continues to expend his greatest photographic effort to doing good by doing art. And for that reason - even if he wasn't the W. Eugene Smith of our era - this multiple-time Magazine Photographer of the Year deserves the support of anyone seriously interested in photography, or in the lives of the people respectfully examined in his work.
